In which I get political

I rarely discuss politics because it's a fruitless pursuit. If you are intelligent and decisive, my arguments are not going to sway you, and for precisely the same reasons, your arguments aren't going to move me. I am, however, absolutely heartsick about what is happening to Benazir Bhutto. She has always been one of the women I admire most. I cannot imagine a more difficult or thankless job than trying to be a voice of reason in a corner of the world that all too often applauds fanaticism. There have been pitfalls along the way, but she has pushed for reform, most notably in health care and the treatment of women. (Can't we all agree that this is a good thing?) Whatever Musharraf's agenda, it cannot be good that he initially offered amnesty and has now declared a state of emergency and has barricaded Bhutto within her compound. Where Pakistan is headed is anybody's guess, but the destabilization of this country isn't going to benefit the rest of the world at all. So, whatever your thoughts about this remarkable woman--did you know she was educated at Radcliffe, Harvard, AND Oxford?--perhaps you might send a good thought or two her way right now. http://edition.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/asiapcf/11/09/bhutto.housearrest/index.html

Edited to add: I stated specifically that I have no intention of changing anyone else's mind, nor is anyone else going to change mine. Comments to this post are closed.
