Doing Good

April 19, 2008

In which we could do some good

If you've ever wondered what to do with unused medication, consider The Starfish Project. Based in New York, the Starfish Project takes "leftover" medication and repackages it to send to Nigerian clinics. They deal primarily with ARVs (antiretrovirals) for HIV-positive patients, but on their website you will find two pages full of other drugs they accept and redistribute--everything from TUMS to vitamins to anitbiotics and TB drugs. They do this at no cost to the donor. The Starfish Project provides FedEx labels for shipping, and the instructions are simple--leave the drugs in the prescription bottle, bag them up, and ship them off. (Naturally, you would need to read the instructions on their site and not take my word for it.) They remove all identifying information and dispose of the original containers, as well as any expired or unusable medications. So, rather than dumping your leftover pills down the toilet or in the trash--so very bad for the environment, you know--give the Starfish Project a chance.

(And if you were wondering, the reason they give the drugs to Nigerians is because it is illegal to redistribute leftover medications to other Americans, but it is perfectly legal to give them as part of a humanitarian effort overseas.)

And on a totally unrelated note, I was interviewed by the lovely and talented Kelly Klepfer of Novel Journey recently. Writer's Digest named it one of the 101 Most Valuable Websites for Writers, and you'll see why as soon as you pop over there. There are interviews with SCADS of famous and diverting people discussing their work, their methods, and their general fabulousness. I was tickled PINK to be asked for an interview! Thanks, Kelly!
